Garlic Mustard Pull at La Tierra Preserve

This year the garlic mustard pull netted less than five full bags. In past years there have been a truckload of bags stuffed with the invasive plants. This is a great testament to past years of hard work. It is nice to see the volunteer work make such a difference.

Sand Creek Prairie Plant Preserve August 14.2010

Despite the hot temperatures and high humidity it was a most enjoyable morning. What fun to see the sand barrens. It was quite interesting to note the difference between the area Nate had burned and that which had not yet been burned. So many discoveries. There are high hopes that our own Badger Barrens will look as beautiful and varied once it takes hold. The barrens which turned to fenn and then culminating in the clear stream was quite the adventure for a group of nature lovers. I am posting a sampling of pictures here and then the rest in the archives for your viewing.

Wildflower Hike at LaTierra Sanctuary

Come join us as we traverse the trails of LaTierra Sanctuary(yes, thanks to boardwalk construction we can now reach the back of the preserve) in search of violets, hepaticas and spring beauties at this annual spring rite. Meet at the LaTierra parking lot. Bring your walking stick, wildflower guide, good walking boots, and a keen eye for behilding the beauty of the LORD's good earth.

Chili Supper and Virtual Hike

In spite of the unexpected blowing and accumulating snow we had 40-45 people turn out for the Chili Supper and Nate's presentation. I think all in attendance would agree to being glad the hike was taken from our chairs following a nice hot bowl of chili rather than outdoors! He launched us in and out of a number of BHM job sites and shared a pictorial of forbs and grasses, snakes, spiders, and butterflies, Sandhill Cranes and a new fawn, motionless, on the ground in its camouflage outfit. Since the presentation was silent except for Nate telling us the location we were viewing, it seemed most fitting to end the show with a writing from the 19th Psalm which describes that the glory of God is revealed without words through all of creation. Very cool stuff and a very cool evening.
