Sandhill Crane Count

Several members of BHM were able to participate in the International Crane Foundation Sandhill Crane Count which took place on April 16. Mark Weldon of the FW Children's Zoo was our organizer. The count was Indiana's first and observers were spread over grids throughout the state. Those of us with BHM were spread over Steuben County. I can only speak of our experience at this time although I know much information will be forthcoming in the near future. Gary and I were given sight #10 which was located on the south shore of Barton Lake near Collins Bay. We woke early and were in place before dawn. The official count took place from 6:30 to 8:30 AM. While we enjoyed various birds including blue birds, swans, and various ducks right away, it was at 6:45 we heard our first call and then saw a Sandhill across the lake wading at water's edge. Eventually we were fortunate to see the pair at the nest. The male was strutting close by and the female was sitting on the nest. What fun. We watched them until the official time was over. We can't wait for the next opportunity to participate in such an event and we anxiously await the official results from the morning's count.
